Greencard Training

This workshop covers all aspects of safety for volunteers working in bushland areas, including Hazardous Substance Handling Training. This accreditation is now required for any Shire of Kalamunda volunteer wishing to use chemicals provided by the shire.

Friends Group coordinators are required to attend this workshop in their first year and at least once every three years after that. All group members are encouraged to attend. Morning tea will be provided.


Cockatoo Cluedo

Which cockatoos have been feeding in your area? Did you know that each of the three cockatoo species that frequent our suburbs leave a distinctive feeding pattern on honkey nuts? Learn more about these species and their feeding habits and how to undertake a qualitative feeding survey, which can be undertaken in any natural reserve.

This session is aimed at those friends groups wanting to learn more about the habits of these birds in their reserve, and those who are willing to undertake regular surveys that will assist with the collection of data regarding the red-tailed black cockatoo, baudins and carnaby’s cockatoos. A BBQ lunch will be provided.


Native Tree Decline

What is happening to our trees? Globally there is a decline in trees as a result of many complex issues. This workshop will focus on marri (Corymbia calophylla), a prominent woodland and urban tree found throughout the South West of WA. Marri is considered a ‘keystone species’ and is one of the many species in decline. Its loss would have dramatic impacts on the integrity of our ecosystems.


Building Nest Boxes

Where: Jorgenson Park Cottage, 20 Kalamunda Weir Road, Kalamunda

Learn how to build your own bat box with a hands-on demonstration and discover the world of microbats with information regarding the ecology and conservation of local bat species. Morning tea will be provided.


Botanical Drawing

Where: Parkerville Hall, corner Seaborn Road and Riley Road, Parkerville

Naturalists throughout the ages have gone out with pencil, charcoal, paper and paints recording and documenting their impressions of the landscape and its inhabitants. These nature journals and field sketch books are the initial data for much of what we know about ecosystems and are valuable for our natural history. This workshop will give participants the opportunity to learn key principles, techniques and benefits of maintaining nature journals and drawings, as an effective way to record observations in the field. This workshop is suitable for participants with little or no experience in drawing.


Dieback: Managing the Menace

Keen to learn more about treatment and control of Dieback in the Perth Hills? In this Bush Skills For The Hills workshop, Katherine Sambrooks from the Dieback Working Group at Murdoch University outlines the history of Dieback, its treatment and new research being conducted into Phytophthora. The session will include an opportunity to learn how to use dieback injectors, and information about other treatment methods for your bushland.


Secret Life of Plants

Dr Kevin Thiele, Curator of the WA Herbarium will provide insights into the flora world, including local plants. This entertaining and factual talk will provide information on the hidden secrets of plants, and exploring the characteristics that make them interesting and special to the plant world. Prepare to be enlightened and find out things you never knew about plants!


Bushtucker Walk

Where did people go to get their food before shops were around? Join our knowledgeable guide as we re-create some of the traditional hunting and gathering techniques used, and discover the variety of bush plants that provided food and other resources necessary for survival.


Native Grasses: Walk and Talk

Learn about your local native grasses and the difference between native and introduced species. Una Bell, Associate Research Assistant with the WA herbarium and author of Common Native Grasses of South-West WA will take us on a tour through the local bushland to discover these delightful treasures in the bush.

Una Bell follows up the Native Grasses: Walk and Talk grass workshop with a more in-depth look at native grasses. This will be an excellent workshop for those who have completed the Native Grasses: Walk and Talk workshop and want a little more detail. If you have a hand lens or magnifying glass and ruler then please bring them along .

What to bring to a workshop

Workshops will often be conducted outside, or have outside sessions. Please wear sturdy footwear (for walking), bring along your hat, sunscreen, water and snacks, and dress suitably for the weather. Bring rain protection, if required.

Cameras may be used, with permission from the event leader on the day.
