Community talk on anaerobic digestion technology

13/06/2011 Community talk on anaerobic digestion technology

On Friday 24 June 2011, EMRC invites the community of Perth's Eastern Region to hear two eminent speakers discuss the application of anaerobic digestion technology to the treatment of household waste. Anaerobic digestion is a technology where organic materials (food and garden waste) from our rubbish are converted into methane or 'biogas' and compost.

This technology is one of several options being considered by EMRC and its member Councils, for the proposed Resource Recovery Facility, which aims to divert household waste from landfill and use it as a resource.

Mr Gerald Tetchner, a UK consultant, will speak on different types of anaerobic digestion, including an overview of their operation and end products, in comparison to other available technologies. Mr Tetchner has been involved in renewable energy projects for over 25 years and has worked with governments around the world to develop and review waste management facilities.

Professor Dongke Zhang, Foundation Professor of Chemical Engineering and Inaugural Director of the Centre for Energy at the University of Western Australia, will focus on current and future research being undertaken on anaerobic digestion at UWA. He has had long-standing research and applied experience in using organic wastes for sustainable energy development.

The presentations from Mr Gerald Tetchner and Professor Dongke Zhang will be held at EMRC's administration office, 226 Great Eastern Highway, Belmont on Friday 24 June from 9.00am to 12.00 noon. There will be a question time for each presenter and morning tea provided.

RSVP's close 5.00 pm on Tuesday 21 June 2011, as seating is strictly limited. Please call (08) 9424 2222 during business hours or email resourcerecovery@emrc.org.au to reserve your seat.
