Compost facility

The Red Hill composting facility is located at 1094 Toodyay Road, Red Hill. The facility recycles greenwaste collected from Council verge collections, greenwaste bins, transfer stations and commercial customers.

EMRC is the only local government in Australia with Australian Standard AS4454 (composts, soil conditioners and mulches).

Why do we compost?

The composting process is implemented to break down organic matter into a valuable organic fertiliser. The process eliminates weed seeds, pathogens and disease that are associated with using raw organics.

There are many benefits associated with using compost including:

  • Supplying nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and minor plant nutrients.
  • Building soil carbon and organic nitrogen.
  • Increasing soil microbial activity.
  • Increasing cation exchange capacity.
  • Increasing the soil's ability to hold water.
  • Improving soil aeration.
  • Improving erosion control
