EMRC launches into renewable energy

06/09/2011 EMRC launches into renewable energy

As part of the Perth Solar City Program, the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) launched a new nine-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) tracking system at their Red Hill Waste Management Facility on Friday, 26 August.

This initiative complements the nine-kilowatt roof-mounted PV system installed at EMRC's Belmont Administration Office in March 2011 and demonstrates the commitment EMRC is making to build a sustainable future for Perth's Eastern Region.

The two solar PV systems are estimated to save just under $8,000 per annum and 31,810 kilograms of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to taking 10 cars off the road.

EMRC Chairman Cr Graham Pittaway OAM actively supports the commitment EMRC is making to adapt and prepare for a low-carbon future.

"I myself have taken up the energy challenge and installed a PV system on my home as part of this program, and am delighted to see that the system is significantly contributing to reducing my family's carbon footprint," said Cr Pittaway at the launch.

EMRC is committed to sustainability and conservation and this project shows the broader community the economic and environmental benefits of wiser energy choices.

LCD monitors have been installed at both sites to show visitors the benefits of adopting renewable energy, by displaying information about the power generation, energy and greenhouse gas abatement that the PV systems are generating.

Perth Solar City is an Australian Government funded program, which is designed to help the local community, governments and businesses to understand practical and creative ways to be smarter about energy consumption.

The Perth Solar City Program is offering free in-home energy assessments and discounted products and services such as solar hot water and photovoltaic energy systems.

Residents in Perth's Eastern Region can get involved in the Perth Solar City Program, by visiting www.perthsolarcity.com.au or calling 1300 399 268.
