Industry clusters

Industry clusters are geographical concentrations of firms in related industries that work together and share knowledge, skills, technology and infrastructure for mutual benefit. Industry clusters aim to enhance the local economy through shared resources, greater investment, improved efficiency, export growth and the identification of synergies to overcome common barriers.

The EMRC Regional Economic Development Strategy seeks to increase the number of quality and sustainable jobs, training opportunities, market demand, production inputs, technology and infrastructure in Perth's Eastern Region.

Please find below information on the following industry clusters:

Engineering and Manufacturing Industry Cooperative Limited

Supported by the EMRC, the Engineering and Manufacturing Industry Cooperative Limited (EMICoL) was formed in 2007 to enrich and advocate for the commercial capabilities of the engineering and manufacturing industry within Perth's Eastern Region and to liaise between government, industry bodies and training providers.

EMICoL has grown to over 20 members with a combined turnover of $200 million per annum.  EMICoL's most outstanding success has been  development of the Linking Engineering Awareness & Pre-Employment Skills (LEAPS) career program, which provides meaningful workplace learning experiences to students in years 11 and 12 that lead to apprenticeships with member companies.

Other EMICoL achievements to date include:

  • Business audits, the Industry Productivity Centre is auditing EMICoL members to identify and assist with implementing business improvements;
  • Hosting a range of member forums and sponsored events;
  • Involvement in the review of the TAFE Training Pathways (Metals);
  • Investigations into an apprenticeship sharing program between EMICoL members; and
  • Investigations into an insurance package, exclusively for EMICoL members, which would offer the best product with great savings and attention to service delivery.

The successful partnership between EMICoL and the EMRC was awarded the Star 3 Media Business Development Award at the 2009 Bartercard Local Chambers Commerce & Industry Business Awards.
