In October, a free Earth Carers training program focused on practical ways to reduce waste at home and in the community will be available to residents in Perth's Eastern Region.
Earth Carers is a community education program which aims to improve community knowledge and skills in waste minimisation at the local government level. It is being coordinated by the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council, with input and support from its six member Councils (Town of Bassendean, Cities of Bayswater, Belmont and Swan, and Shires of Kalamunda and Mundaring).
The program trains community volunteers in practical ways of reducing waste at home, promoting waste minimisation in their local communities, and builds their knowledge of waste management issues.
EMRC Chairman, Cr David Fardig encourages people to get out and attend the program. "Earth Carers is an excellent way for the community to learn more about waste management and the practical steps that can be taken to reduce waste in our daily lives", he said.
The training will include tours, guest speakers, practical demonstrations and resources, and will begin on 7 October.
The EMRC will hold two information sessions preceding the training at the Midland Junction Arts Centre. The first session will feature Josh Byrne from the ABC's hit TV show 'Gardening Australia' as a special guest speaker, on Wednesday 16 September 2009 (5.45pm-7.00pm). The second session will run on Saturday 19 September 2009 (10.30am-11.30am).
