Local government plays an important role in the protection of natural resources in our region. The iconic Swan River, one of Perth's most precious natural resources is at risk of contamination from nutrients and other pollutants leaching down from major catchment areas of the Swan-Canning river systems.
EMRC, in partnership with the Swan River Trust, has developed a set of guidelines for local governments in priority catchment areas. The Local Government Natural Resource Management (NRM) Policy Manual is an easy to use reference guide designed to assist local governments to manage natural resources in their region, and reduce nutrient and other pollutants in priority catchment areas of the Swan-Canning river systems.
There are 13 local governments located within the Healthy Rivers Program priority catchment areas on the eastern side of the Swan Coastal Plan where the manual can be used:
The NRM Policy Manual includes best practice guidelines for areas such as: land use planning and development control; stormwater/drainage management; and provision of services such as recreational facilities.
Download the NRM Policy Manual here.
EMRC has also developed Policy Development Guidelines. These guidelines have been developed to outline a process that can be used by local government to develop policies, using the format adopted within the Local Government NRM Policy Manual. The Policy Development Guidelines are available to download below.
