The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act (2007) was passed in 2007 to provide a national framework for reporting and disseminating information related to greenhouse gas emissions, projects and energy consumption and production of corporations.
The act will underpin the introduction of a Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme; fulfil Australia's international reporting obligations; inform the government and the Australian public and steamline national reporting requirements.
The first annual reporting period began on 1 July 2008.
The Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme will be implemented under the NGER Act, providing the emissions data on which obligations under the CPRS will be based. The scheme is part of the Australian government's strategy to reduce Australia's carbon pollution by 60 per cent of 2000 levels by 2050.
