1981 | Landfill operations commenced at the southern end of Lot 11 in 1981 and progressed northwards. By 1992 landfill activities on Lot 11 were completed and rehabilitation of that part of the site commenced, continuing until late 1996. |
1992 to 1997 |
Between 1992 and 1997 Lot 1 and the northern end of Lot 2 were used for landfill operations. Rehabilitation of these areas commenced in late 1997. |
1998 |
In December 1997, EMRC was granted approval to build a facility for Class IV waste. Construction commenced in 1997, and the first consignment of Class IV waste was received in May 1998. In 1997, EMRC received a Case Earth Award* in recognition of the project. |
2003 |
A greenwaste processing area has been established, which enables over 12,000 tonnes of greenwaste to be diverted from landfill annually. If landfilled, it would have contributed to the generation of leachate, which if allowed to come into contact with groundwater supplies, could contaminate groundwater. In landfill, greenwaste would decompose producing methane, which has 21 times the greenhouse gas potential of carbon dioxide. |
2004 | Stage 10 of the Class III cell was constructed during 2004. This provided the capacity for waste disposal until 2007-2008. Work also begun on the design for Stage 2 of the Class IV cell. |
2007 | A major construction project at the Red Hill Waste Management Facility was undertaken, on behalf of EMRC, by Ertech Pty Ltd to provide for additional waste landfill capacity. The project involved constructing a new Class III cell (stage 11) to contain 1.1 million cubic metres of commercial and municipal waste, and a new Class IV cell (stage 2) to contain 300,000 cubic metres of low hazard contaminated soil. Additional leachate ponds are also being constructed as part of this project. |
