What is Perth Solar City?

Perth's Eastern Region is home to the Perth Solar City Program; one of seven designated solar cities across Australia. The $73.5 million Australian Government Perth Solar City Program is a suite of initiatives designed to bring together individuals, communities, governments and business to trial and showcase practical and creative ways to be smarter about our energy use. By changing the way we think about and use energy, Perth’s Eastern Region will be in a better position to adapt and prepare for a low carbon future.

Consortium

The EMRC and its member councils; Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, City of Belmont, Shire of Mundaring, Shire of Kalamunda and City of Swan, have worked with a number of consortium partners to bring the Perth Solar City Program to the communities of Perth's Eastern Region. The consortium consists of Western Power (as the lead consortium partner), EMRC, Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority and industry partners Mojarra, Prospero Productions, Solahart, SunPower and Synergy.

Project Deliverables

There are a number of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects being undertaken or implemented by each of the Consortium members. Most are being undertaken within Perth's Eastern Region. These include:

• In home displays
• Time of Use Tariff
• Photovoltaic (PV) saturation Trial
• Smart Meters
• Direct Load Control Trial
• Free Home Eco-consultation
• PV and Solar Hot Water system discounts
• Schools Education Program
• Eco-House Competition and home open days
• Five Iconic Demonstration Projects.

EMRC Specific deliverables include:

• Fourteen Demonstration Projects
• Sustainable Communities Completion
• Living Smart – Eco-coaching calls and 6x6 week Courses.

Living Smart

EMRC contracted the Department of Transport to implement the behavioural change program, Living Smart, to the residence of Perth’s Eastern Region. Aimed at assisting householders to achieve energy, water and transport efficiency, the program was delivered to the community through individual phone coaching sessions over the course of 12 months in 201/11.

Initial results have show that the program has assisted with saving approximately 197 kL of water and 14,000 kWh of energy per day through residents committing to making a change.

In addition to the personalised coaching calls the traditional six (6) week course were also offered to the community throughout 2010.

Demonstration Projects

Fourteen demonstration projects have been completed within the Eastern Metropolitan Region. These demonstration projects are to engage and educate community members and showcase different renewable and energy saving technologies.

Watch Hazelmere Power Along

You can now view a live feed of the Hazelmere demonstration project by visiting the Sunny Portal website.

Watch the systems power profile increase on bright sunny days and decrease generation as cloud cover passes overhead.

Power-mates

The power-mate is an electrical device used to examine data in relation to an individual appliance. Measurements include; watts, volts, amps, cost to run per hour, quarter or year, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and running time for the appliance the power-mate is attached to.

Each EMRC member council through their commitment to the Perth Solar City Program has a number of these devices located within their libraries ready for community members to hire.

For power-mate locations please refer to our Home Energy Audits webpage.
