School programs

The provision of waste education programs for schools is a priority in Perth's Eastern Region.

Transpacific Cleanaway waste education staff deliver waste education incursions to primary schools. As part of the program, Cleanaway promotes EMRC school tour program of the Red Hill Waste Management Facility. Over 1,000 students visit the facility annually.

In addition to hosting school tours and activities at the Environmental Education Centre, EMRC coordinates several other school waste education programs in Perth's Eastern Region on behalf of its member Councils. EMRC also collaborates with officers delivering state-run waste education programs to contribute locally relevant content and updated information on local waste and recycling services.

High school community service program

The Community Service Program is a WA initiative which encourages secondary students to complete a minimum of twenty hours of community service before graduating from year 12. This year EMRC has begun working with local high schools to complete a number of projects.

The projects are based around waste and environmental management. Throughout term two and three students from Helena College have been helping to transform the outside of the Environmental Education Centre by creating vibrant art panels and a range or garden at, made from recovered objects and/or with an environmental theme.

Using wooden panels as their canvas, students have been creating pieces of art using materials and objects which would have been thrown away to landfill. Once complete, the panels are fixed to the exterior of the education centre. Visiting school groups can admire the art and see it as a creative example of materials being reused instead of going to landfill.

Before starting the projects, students are required to participate in a tour of the Red Hill landfill site and an induction with EMRC staff members to gain an understanding of how waste is managed in Perth's Eastern Region and the importance of reducing and reusing waste. A community artist assists students with their ideas and gives guidance on different techniques that can be explored.

Future options for community service projects include:

  • Developing garden art for the Environmental Education Centre using recovered objects and materials
  • Developing window coverings focused on environmental themes and using recovered materials for the interior of the centre.
  • On-site rehabilitation projects.
  • Working with students and teachers in developing their own waste-wise programs at school.

EMRC hopes to continue partnering with different schools from across Perth's Eastern Region to complete these community service projects.
