Walking and cycling for recreation and transport remain the top four popular forms of physical activity, according to a recent survey by the Physical Activity Taskforce of over 3,000 adults in WA.
EMRC has negotiated a funding agreement with the Department of Transport to develop an Active Transport Strategy for Walking and Cycling for Perth's Eastern Region and a walkability audit tool. The objectives for the Regional Active Transport Strategy for Walking and Cycling are to improve the planning of places where people cycle or walk for transport and recreational activities and to improve local government knowledge and skills in planning for cycling and walking. A project methodology and approach was designed and a site location for developing the audit tool was selected. The site will be Midland. The project was launched in December 2010.
The strategy will aim to assist in guiding member Councils in the future development of their own individual approaches to walking and cycling and will provide a blueprint for ensuring future associated active transport infrastructure is created in harmony with regional and State identified priorities. The strategy will also provide direction for advocacy, promotion and integration of land use planning to enable community engagement with active transport.
