09/11/2011 Regional role for Cr Pilgrim

Cr Alan Pilgrim of the Shire of Mundaring was elected as Chairman of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) at an Ordinary Council meeting on 3 November 2011.

Cr Pilgrim has experience in local government, having served as a councillor on the Mundaring Shire Council for seven years, and EMRC's Council for the last two years.

With an extensive background in university lecturing, Dr Pilgrim is an Associate Professor of Geography at Curtin University. His academic teaching, research and public speaking skills provide a good foundation on which to lead EMRC's Council over the next two years and support key regional issues and projects.

"I am pleased to be elected as EMRC Chairman and embrace this role as an opportunity to represent our region as a collective grouping; six councils working together to achieve shared common outcomes," said Cr Pilgrim.

Driven by an interest in environmental sustainability, Cr Pilgrim's vision for Perth's Eastern Region is centred on best-practice waste management and recovery techniques, and a future that encourages community involvement in addressing the challenges presented by climate change.

EMRC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Peter Schneider, said he was looking forward to working with Cr Pilgrim and the new EMRC Council over the next two years and acknowledged the commitment of the past Chairman.

Cr Janet Powell from the City of Belmont, has been elected as EMRC's Deputy Chairman.

Following the local government elections on 15 October 2011, each member council appointed two representatives and a deputy to EMRC, who were subsequently sworn in at EMRC's Ordinary Council meeting on 3 November 2011.

The councillors and deputies sworn in until the next local government elections in October 2013 are:
