The unique characteristics of tourism offer employment and cultural benefits to the community and regional economy. In 2007/08 tourism accounted for the employment in one in twelve people across a broad range of sectors in Australia, and contributed over $40 billion to Australia's gross domestic product (National Long Term Tourism Strategy, 2009).
Tourism contributes through the development of infrastructure that benefits residents (e.g. trails) and the appreciation of cultures through the exchange between visitors and residents.
Perth's Eastern Region offers visitors the opportunity to experience food and wine; arts, heritage and culture and interact with nature.
Perth's Eastern Region is grouped into three precincts:
The EMRC supports member Councils in the management, development and promotion of the precincts.
Providing a welcoming face to the region are the three visitor centres, based in Guildford, Mundaring and Kalamunda. These visitor centres are supported by tourism industry associations and Councils, providing strategic and on ground services to visitors.

The EMRC has facilitated regional tourism development activities through collaboration with member Councils and industry since 1998. In performing this function the EMRC has previously been guided by various strategies, including the Regional Tourism Development Plan (2004).
In 2009 the need to develop a new tourism strategy document was identified due to changes in the tourism industry environment; development of economic and tourism strategies by member Councils; and revisions to local tourism industry management structures.
The new Regional Tourism Strategy (RTS) will guide the EMRC in the delivery of agreed regional tourism activities for the period 2010 to 2015. The RTS will ensure that tourism activities delivered by the EMRC at the regional level continue to complement those of member Councils at the local and precinct levels.

PerthTourism.com.au is a regional tourism website managed by the EMRC to provide destination information to prospective visitors to Perth's Eastern Region. This website refers visitors to the accredited visitor centres located in the region for detailed product information and bookings. It provides a consistent 'call to action' on all regional marketing activities. This website hosts the dynamic online Regional Calendar of Events, a valuable opportunity for free marketing of community events held in Perth's Eastern Region.
In 2009/10 PerthTourism.com.au has undergone a substantial redevelopment to provide a modern new consumer interface, increased event promotion opportunities for event managers, and a dedicated trails promotion section.
The EMRC and Mundaring Tourism Association coordinated the development of an innovative, 64-page, DL size publication which showcases a range of cycle and tourism experiences accessible by public transport from the Midland Railway Line.
The free publication is aimed at recreational cyclists with predominately on-road riding (suited to beginner, family and serious recreation riders), and mountain biking rides in the Perth Hills (with rides to suit a range of different experience levels).
The four ride routes are separately available for download by following the below links to the PerthTourism.com.au website;
Copies of the publication are available from the Swan Valley, Mundaring and Kalamunda Visitor Centres; local Council offices and facilities; and a range of tourism and hospitality businesses located along the ride routes.
Copies of the publication are available on request by contacting Samantha Robshaw on (08) 9424 2262 or samantha.robshaw@emrc.org.au.
The Cycle Perth's Eastern Region guide is a collaborative project between the EMRC, the Mundaring Tourism Association, the Department of Transport - as a Cycle Instead initiative, the Department of Sport and Recreation, Lotterywest and Tourism Western Australia.
The EMRC supports the development and promotion of two annual regional event programs;
Held on the first weekend in August this thrilling white water race on the Avon and Swan Rivers commences in Northam and finishes in Bayswater. Councils along the river foreshore stage family fun days to engage their communities and visitors in the event. The EMRC supports the Councils to take a collaborative approach to securing grant funding and promoting the family fun days.
