Waste becomes costly

08/01/2010 Waste becomes costly

Disposal fees for waste delivered in cars and trailers at the Red Hill Waste Management Facility have been reviewed and are set to rise from 1 January 2010.

As a result of the 300 per cent increase in the State Government's Landfill Levy announced on 14 May 2009 and confirmed on 8 December 2009, EMRC has amended its 2009/10 waste fees and charges. Costs associated with disposing of waste into landfill at Red Hill have, unfortunately, been increased.

EMRC's bid, together with other local authorities, for the government to hold off implementing the landfill levy increase for six months was successful. However, concerns raised about where the funds being collected were going to be used have not been addressed.

The reason for the increased levy given by the WA Treasurer, was that it will create a disincentive to dispose of waste to landfill, and therefore, encourage the reuse or recycle of waste.

"We recognise that residents will be opposed to paying the increased charges to dispose of waste at the gate, especially in the current climate," says EMRC Chairman, Cr Graham Pittaway OAM.

"To help minimise the effects of the landfill levy, we urge customers to separate greenwaste and recyclables from their general waste."

Domestic waste, which customers bring to Red Hill in cars and trailers, is generally disposed of in landfill and therefore part of the levy increase will be applicable to these loads.

"Along with the increase in the landfill levy, there will also be a substantial increase in the penalty for illegal dumping of waste. We hope this will serve as a reminder to the public to do the right thing," advised Cr Pittaway.

Residents in Perth's Eastern Region should consider options for reusing or reselling their unwanted goods. More information can be found by visiting www.rgang.org.au and clicking on their Councils A-Z guide.

Members of the public are asked to contact the Keep Australia Beautiful Hotline on 1300 766 541 to report illegal dumping of waste.
