Updated Waste and Recycling Guides to assist Perth’s Eastern Region residents manage and reduce household waste are set to be delivered to thousands of households during July and August 2021.

The Guides have been produced by the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) in collaboration with its member Councils the Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, City of Kalamunda, Shire of Mundaring and the City of Swan.

EMRC CEO Marcus Geisler said, ‘The 2021/2022 Waste & Recycling Guides are an extremely useful resource for managing household waste and improving recycling rates.  This is becoming an even more important issue as we roll out a three-bin Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service across Perth’s Eastern Region.

‘I encourage all residents to keep their guide handy in the kitchen and refer to it regularly for information on how to reduce, recycle or reuse household waste throughout the year, but more importantly to put it in the right bin.’

The compact, easy-to-use Waste & Recycling Guides provide:

  • Bin collection dates from 1 July 2021 through to 30 June 2022
  • Full details of residents’ bin collection days and recycling weeks
  • Bulk verge collection dates or bulk bin orders
  • A guide to correct positioning of bins on roadsides
  • A comprehensive guide on how to responsibly sort household waste and materials for recycling, answering questions such as what goes in each bin, what should be left out for kerbside collection or bulk bins and what should be taken to the Red Hill Waste Management Facility
  • Household Hazardous Waste disposal locations; indicating where items such as paints, oils, batteries and gas cylinders can be dropped off
  • Handy recycling tips, including where unwanted items can be returned to the community for reuse or recycling

The guides, and more information on waste management in Perth’s Eastern Region, are available for download from the R-Gang website www.rgang.org.au.  If residents do not receive their 2021/22 Waste and Recycling Guide by the end of September, they are encouraged to contact their local council.

This initiative is part of EMRC’s Regional Waste Education Strategy, which aims to divert waste from landfill by promoting waste as a resource and informing Perth’s Eastern Region residents on effective waste management practices. The EMRC Waste Education team coordinates the region’s battery and fluorescent light collection program for schools and public places and also offers free tours of the EMRC Red Hill Waste Management Facility.

Other initiatives from the Waste Education Team include waste audit kits to help reduce and increase understanding of the types of waste created by households. In addition, a bi-annual Earth Carers’ course helps communities to ‘live lighter’ in the environment.
