EMRC congratulates City of Bayswater on a successful FOGO rollout

The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) congratulates the City of Bayswater for its successful launch of a new household three-bin waste sorting system for collection of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) material.

Launched in the City last week and being progressively rolled out over coming weeks, FOGO enables Bayswater residents to separate FOGO material from other waste to be used to create organic compost. This FOGO material, separated and placed into kitchen caddies and then deposited in residents’ lime green lid bins, is taken to the EMRC’s Waste Management Facility where it is converted into compost instead to be placed in landfill, where its value would otherwise be lost.

The sustainability-focused rollout follows extensive community engagement and campaigning by City of Bayswater staff supported by a team of EMRC waste education specialists. The new collection service augments the City’s existing Garden Organics (GO) collection system.

The new lime green lid bins, kitchen caddies and an initial one year’s supply of compostable bags are being provided free to City of Bayswater residents

In 2020 the EMRC distributed $13.9m to its six member Councils to help pay for new lime green lid bins, kitchen caddies, community education and other related FOGO-related commitments.  FOGO will be rolled out progressively across all of Perth’s Eastern Region by 2025, making a major contribution towards the Western Australian Government’s waste diversion targets.

Lime green lid FOGO bins in the City of Bayswater are collected weekly.  Existing fortnightly collections of yellow lid bin recycling materials will continue as normal with red lid general waste bins collected on alternate weeks. A useful guide to FOGO, produced by the City, is available here .

EMRC CEO Marcus Geisler said, ‘The City of Bayswater deserves warm congratulations for its commitment to sustainability and to the rollout of FOGO. Over the coming weeks, every resident in the City will have the opportunity to play an important part in making FOGO a success.’
