Raising awareness around the benefits of advanced planning to increase community safety and reduce the risk of flood damage to residents and communities is the aim of the EMRC’s Flood Aware Be Prepared Campaign.

The Campaign's purpose is to build resilient communities in Perth's Eastern Region through raising awareness of the flood risks associated with the Swan and Helena Rivers in a consistent manner across the Town of Bassendean, City of Bayswater, City of Swan, City of Belmont, City of South Perth and Town of Victoria Park in conjunction with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER).

The Flood Aware Be Prepared Campaign includes a set of videos designed for social media sharing and Council-specific brochures aimed at raising community awareness of the hazards of flooding, with practical suggestions for household flood preparations.

The campaign’s objectives are to:

  • Increase overall community knowledge about flood hazards and risks
  • Increase community capacity for faster and better response during flood events
  • Enable community identification of high-risk flood zones
  • Improve flood risk awareness and flood event preparations
  • Enable early identification of potential flood events
  • Increase awareness of the dangers of floodwater
