The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) is supporting the safe and responsible disposal of a whale carcass that recently stranded at City Beach, with burial to occur at the Red Hill Waste Management Facility.
While such operations are uncommon, the disposal has been approved by the relevant authorities and reflects the important role the facility plays in providing specialised waste management and environmental response services to Western Australian communities.
The whale carcass is expected to be transported to the Red Hill Waste Management Facility in accordance with operational requirements and regulatory approvals. All handling and burial activities will be undertaken under strict environmental, safety and operational controls.
EMRC Chief Executive Officer, Hua Jer Liew, said the operation highlights our facility's capacity to respond to complex and unusual waste management challenges in a safe, responsible, environmentally conscious and community sensitive manner.
"The Red Hill Waste Management Facility provides an important public service, supporting the safe management of materials and situations that require specialised handling.
While the disposal of a stranded whale is not a routine occurrence, EMRC has the expertise, infrastructure and environmental safeguards necessary to manage the process appropriately and responsibly.
Our priority is to ensure the disposal is undertaken safely, efficiently and with minimal impact on the surrounding community and environment.
This operation demonstrates the important role the facility plays in supporting broader community and environmental outcomes across Western Australia when unique circumstances arise."
Residents living near the facility may notice temporary odours associated with the arrival and burial of the carcass. EMRC will undertake the operation as efficiently as practicable to minimise any impacts on neighbouring communities. Any associated odours are expected to be temporary and to dissipate once burial activities are completed.
EMRC appreciates the understanding of residents and the wider community while this operation is carried out.
