Staying secure with Belmont-based Strike Training and Consulting

Gaps in security fencing are being successfully filled - by a rapidly-diversifying, award-winning Belmont business.

Strike De-Fence has been launched to develop and sell an innovative security fencing system for outdoor events across the Perth Metropolitan Region.

As security requirements have intensified in recent years, traditional temporary fencing at festivals, concerts and large gatherings of people is no longer considered fit for purpose. Strike De-Fence founder Gaven Wicks believes that concrete barriers and cyclone fences are completely insufficient for modern security and safety requirements.

Gaven explained: ‘Most organisations are still using concrete barriers set in water and cyclone fences which are completely insufficient for modern security and safety needs.

‘We quite literally saw a gap in the fencing market.  Our organisation has since registered patents on our unique interlocking design in Europe, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.‘

Strike De-Fence is an offshoot of Strike Training and Consulting, which has seen four years of growth supplying trained security guards, crowd controllers, bodyguards and investigators.

Gaven Wicks used his 25 years’ experience with the NSW Police Force to start Strike Training and Consulting with his partner Emma, achieving accreditation in 2016. The company has since added personal safety and security, women’s self defence, terrorism awareness and conflict management to its list of security-related services.  Its client list includes include small and large businesses, government agencies, councils and charities, each of which receives a bespoke package according to its security needs.

Employing former United Nations, WA Police, Australian Defence Force personnel and providing a low-cost women’s personal safety course are among the features which caught the eye of the judging panel at the 2019 Belmont and Western Australian Small Business Awards. They chose Strike Training and Consulting as winner of the coveted Corporate and Social Responsibility Award.

Gaven explained: ‘We have trained many women who are in domestic violence situations alongside women of all ages – including many mother and daughter teams who want to take a proactive approach to their personal safety and security. We can tailor our programs to particular clients with individual requirements, with no need to buy our courses from other suppliers.

‘Our trainers share over 100 years’ experience, enabling creation of unique courses incorporating every practical requirement of the security and investigation industry. Having ex-armed forces and ex-enforcement personnel as trainers in our business is something we are genuinely proud of.

‘More businesses are acknowledging they need to provide their employees with environmental awareness tools and the skills needed to protect themselves.’

Useful marketing tools are bespoke workplace and personal safety training videos. Clients can access training videos online, reducing face to face training time which is required for course completion.

Gaven added: ‘Our ability to constantly evolve and update our training to best serve our clients makes our business stand out and as such, be successful.  We are continuously re-investing funds back into our business, enhancing our training and providing our students with the best experience and training possible.’

The company’s self defence classes for women are held monthly on a Saturday morning.  Classes are pegged at a low cost of $60 for three hours, helping ensure that everyone who wants to learn these vital skills is able to attend.
