City of Swan Avon Descent Festival
The Avon Descent Family Fun Days, supported by Lotterywest, are a series of family-orientated events held annually on a weekend in August alongside the Avon Descent and are a perfect opportunity for family and friends to get outdoors and experience the excitement of the event.
We look forward to creating opportunities for the whole community to come together to enhance community connection, strengthen social capital, and encourage the community to repair and rebuild itself from the pandemic.
First held in 1973, the Avon Descent is Western Australia's unique paddle and powerboat sporting event. Avon Descent competitors challenge the Avon and Swan Rivers in a variety of paddle and power craft in an exciting two-day challenge over 124 gruelling kilometres.
Together with participating Councils, Shire Northam, Shire Toodyay, City of Swan and the City of Bayswater we aim to create a family-friendly atmosphere to connect the local communities along the Avon and Swan Rivers.
Lotterywest has been a major community supporter of the Avon Descent Family Fun Day events since 2004.

Avon River Festival

Celebrate the excitement of the start of the world's greatest white water event at the Avon River Festival.
Kicking off the Family Fun Day excitement is the Shire of Northam’s Bilya (meaning river) Festival on Friday 12 August – the busiest night in town of the year! Northam is also the Avon Descent Starting Line, so get in quick and book your accommodation, enjoy the evening of festivities and then cheer on the starting line in the morning.
This year the Northam Bilya Festival highlights the theme of sustainability. The evening’s celebrations start with a Welcome to Country, smoking ceremony and river blessing for a safe Avon Descent weekend. The festivities continue with the annual community street parade, the ceremonial turning on of the lights on Australia’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge spanning the Avon River, and more family fun activities!

Toodyay International Food Festival
and Family Fun Day

Nothing beats an exciting finish. Join the family fun.
Enjoy mouth-watering food and free family entertainment at the Toodyay International Food Festival. Held on the banks of the Avon River, it’s the perfect location to watch the Avon Descent race. Highlights include food trucks, food stalls, on-stage entertainment, face painting, bouncing castles, animal far, and roving entertainment.

Combine the thrill of the Avon Descent with delicious cuisine.
Come down to Riverside Gardens at 11am where you will find a range of fun activities to enjoy. Entertainment rides, food stalls, markets and activities for the whole family!
Cheer on the Race competitors from the City of Bayswater Avon Descent Finish Line Family Fun Day, where you get up close and personal with the Avon Descent as well as interact with a whole lot of family fun lasting all afternoon.

The Avon Descent Festival returns to Lilac Hill with a splash in 2022!
With a cracking onstage line up on the Brabham Estate main stage including Coby Grant, Josephine and Goggles, Fliptease Circus and big screens showing live race footage from Bells Rapids!
Plus grab some delish eats from the food truck line up and kick back in the Movida Estate chill zone, take in the Artisan and Retro Markets, a stack of free rides, amusements and more!
